Spanish Ship Bay is a part of Liscomb
Harbor, located on Nova Scotia’s Eastern Shore. Rumor has it that the
name originated because Captain Kidd used the bay as a place to hide his
ships from British warships. Nowadays the bay’s treasures are its tasty
mussels and scallops and its picturesque islands teeming with
shorebirds.
Our guesthouse sits on the shore of this bay, across the street from the
village general store. The house was recently renovated, and has two
bedrooms and two baths, a modern kitchen and a large living/dining area.
Amenities include a gas fireplace and satellite television. The
south-facing view out over the water from the living room and deck is
spectacular.
Our 572 square foot cottage sits adjacent to our wharf next to a
babbling brook. The cottage built in 2007 gives you a panoramic view of
the bay and its shore lines. It has a queen bed with an ensuite four
piece bath, futon, large kitchen and living area, cathedral ceiling and
skylight. As you sit on the spacious deck watching the birds and
listening to the tranquil sounds of the brook, you will realize paradise
is not so expensive; this might be the only therapy you’ll ever need.
The Eastern Shore is the least developed part of Nova Scotia and its
natural beauty remains unspoiled. The house is provided with two kayaks
in which you can explore the bay. Liscomb Harbor is an excellent site
for sea kayaking, as are the adjacent harbors of Gegoggan and Ecum Secum.
It is also a suburb location for daysailing and boating, and we
encourage you to bring your own boats. The guest house has its own
launching ramp and floating dock where you can tie up for the length of
your stay.
If you are a scuba diver, we can show you the best sites for scallop
diving and help you obtain a license and air, and we can arrange for a
boat to take you there. If you like to hike, the Liscomb Lodge has great
trails along the banks of the Liscomb river that will take you upstream
to an old suspension bridge and fish ladder. Or we can arrange for a
boat ride to Liscomb Island, where a two mile hike will take you to the
lighthouse and a picnic lunch on the rocks of the Atlantic shore. Boat
rides can also be taken to Gegoggan Harbor (inaccessible by road) where
you can dig steamers, quahogs and razor clams on miles of isolated,
sandy beaches. In the fall we offer guided hunting trips for bear, deer
and duck. Squash players can get temporary memberships at the nearby
Liscomb Squash Club. Both the Liscomb River and the St. Mary’s river are
excellent salmon streams and the inland lakes in this area teem with
trout.
Children will delight in exploring the rock pools on the intertidal zone
in front of the guest house. Ten miles to the east is
Sherbrooke Village, a restored 19th century village museum whose
exhibits include a working smithy, boatbuilding shop and water powered
sawmill. The Little Bookroom in Little Liscomb is a children’s library
with over three thousand volumes. It’s not easy to be bored in Liscomb.
We encourage you to call or email us with any questions. We look forward
to your stay with us, knowing that it will be a memorable and
unforgettable experience.
